Septaria are formed secondarily during the formation of clay rocks.
In this process, carbonaceous fluids circulating in the rock begin to cement the clay particles together from a seed.
In this way, consolidated concretions form in the midst of the sediment, as can be seen by the fact that the stratification of the host rock passes through the concretion.
With further shrinkage due to water loss, the conretion ruptures internally, creating cavities which in turn later fill with calcite formations from circulating carbonaceous fluids.
Important occurrences of septaria are found in Utah/USA and on Madagascar.
